STEM Career Clubs

Program Overview

STEM Career Clubs is a 3-year project (2014 – 2017) funded by the National Science Foundation (Project #: 1433747) to establish and maintain exciting STEM Career Clubs in middle schools in Northampton, Vance, Nash-Rocky Mount and Warren Counties in NC. A STEM Career Club is a powerful and highly enjoyable way to engage students with STEM subjects. They are fun and fulfilling for students and club leaders, and have positive impacts for the school. The project has three interlinked objectives to achieve this goal:

Facilitate students’ and parents’ identification with the STEM community by increasing their awareness of, interest in, and positive perceptions of STEM fields and careers;
Increase students’ and teachers’ STEM content knowledge and skills; and
Enhance the impact of a Strategic Teaming Model on leader, teacher, parent, and student perceptions of STEM Career Clubs innovation.

Activities

STEM Career Clubs meet at least six times per semester and engage students in STEM activities related to STEM careers. The activities below were used in recent STEM Career Clubs and have clear instructions on how to easily implement them in any after school club. The first three activities were done in collaboration with the Center for Inquiry-Based Learning (CIBL). Teachers can contact CIBL for information kit rental.
