The Mountain Office is one of 2 satellite offices of The Science House. The Mountain Office serves more than 48,000 elementary, middle, and high school students and over 1200 teachers and administrators for 18 school systems in western North Carolina. Mountain Office staff provide professional development, consulting, instructional coaching, school-based assistance, curriculum materials, student programs and various technologies and equipment to western NC counties. The Mountain Office is located inside The Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC.

The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the The Science House Mountain Office Equipment Loan Program.

Duties Include:

  • Deliver and pick up ELP equipment at schools throughout western NC territory.
  • Maintain ELP equipment
  • Prepare equipment outgoing to schools
  • Inspect returning equipment and do any necessary resupplying or repair
  • Keep all computer software up-to-date, and ensure functionality and compliance with university protocol
  • Maintain organization, labeling and storage of equipment
  • Develop and maintain relationships with teachers, staff, and administrators at schools participating in the ELP
  • Promote/Market the ELP and foster relationships with new and potential ELP participants
  • Assist educators in using equipment
  • Administer TSH/MSO MyTurn Website by maintaining up-to-date inventory, monitor reservations and check out materials
  • Maintain communication with educators (email, face to face, phone)
  • Collect, document and track data about ELP usage
  • Conduct proper chemical protocols according to MSDS

Location: Asheville, NC
Schedule: Varies per week (25 hours, .625 FTE), Monday-Friday, 8am – 5pm.
Required: NC Drivers License
Salary: $18-$20/hour

The Science House’s Imhotep and Kyran Anderson programs introduce elementary and middle school students to the world of STEM. Programs are designed to enhance students’ enthusiasm and preparation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with a particular emphasis on reaching under-served and students historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Students actively discover the wonder of STEM through inquiry-based activities, field trips, presentations, and career exploration activities with STEM professionals.

Kyran Anderson Academy is a one week daily summer program for rising third through sixth graders. Imhotep Academy offers one week daily summer sessions, as well as Fall and Spring sessions for middle school students on Saturdays from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Instructors may be hired for either or both camps.

Temporary STEM Instructor 2024

The STEM Instructor will plan, prepare, and deliver curricula and instruction for Imhotep and Kyran Anderson camps, academies, and track-out programs.

5-10 hours, varies per week, Saturdays 8am-1pm, Summer or Track Out Camps: Monday – Friday 8am-5pm

Temporary STEM Camp Counselor 2024

Camp Counselors provide general program support and direct supervision of campers during summer camps, track-out programs, and Saturday academies.
