A Residential STEM Camp
During the summer, Scholars will attend a five-day residential research program at NC State University in Raleigh, NC. Scholars will participate in a series of professional development activities including site visits, workshops, and structured and unstructured interactions with mentors, familiarizing them with the college environment and introducing them to academic and non-academic science careers.
Authentic Scientific Research
Scholars will receive training in DNA sequence analysis, basic microbiological techniques, basic plant husbandry, hypothesis development, and experimental design. The Scholars will use these skills to determine the microbial composition of soil samples isolated from their communities.
