Imhotep 2019 Optics Session
Imhotep Academy is a year-round middle school enrichment program that introduces students to the world of STEM with a particular emphasis on reaching underserved and students historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Imhotep aims to increase students’ awareness and enthusiasm for learning STEM, build students’ confidence and identity in STEM, and inspire students to continue studying STEM throughout high school and college. Participants engage in a variety of activities including hands-on investigations, laboratory tours, field trips, leadership, college readiness, and interactions with STEM professionals.
6th – 8th Grade Students
Four Academy sessions are offered throughout the year. Fall and Spring sessions meet Saturday mornings from 8:55 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Summer and Algebra sessions meet for one week in June and one week in July from 8:55 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
VIRTUAL – Disease Detectives: The World of Epidemiology
Students will learn about disease diagnosis, transmission, and prevention through hands-on investigations, mathematical models, and technology activities. Participants will explore the importance of vaccines and careers within the field of epidemiology.
Students will learn about genetic engineering processes, DNA modeling/applications, and genetic research used to treat diseases through hands-on investigations, mathematical models, and technology activities. Participants will explore careers within the field of genetics.
Students will learn the skills it takes to be a neuroscientist through hands-on investigations, an engineering challenge, and research on brain diseases. Participants will explore careers within the field of neuroscience.
Students will learn about the skeletal muscular system and the engineering design process. Using limited materials, students will apply knowledge learned and engineering principles to build and test limbs. Participants will learn about careers within the field of biomedical engineering and robotics.
