Youth Programs at The Science House at CMAST
The Science House at CMAST offers a range of youth programs for middle school and high school students throughout the school year as well as during the summer. We look forward to engaging your student in STEM education!
Sea Wolf 4-H Club
The Sea Wolf 4-H Club offers citizenship learning and leadership opportunities for middle and high school students (ages 13-18) interested in marine and environmental sciences. The Sea Wolves section off into separate committees depending on current interests within the club. By working as a team and taking charge of events, the Sea Wolves take on adult responsibilities to prepare them for future success. Currently, the committees include a focus on the following subjects or events:
- Underwater Robotics (ROVs)
- North Carolina Envirothon Competition
- Science Communications
The Sea Wolves meet at CMAST on the first Thursday of the month from September to May at 7:00 PM. Committee meeting dates and times may vary.
Coastal Carolina Regional MATE ROV Competition
For the Coastal Carolina Regional MATE ROV Competition, middle and high school students in coastal North Carolina create a team of their peers in order to construct their own underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Teams act as companies competing for a work contract while the ROVs are thought of as “products.” Companies must be able to perform a product demonstration simulating real life scenarios engineers encounter in the ocean workplace. Each team of students must also prepare a marketing presentation in order to sell their including technical reports and poster displays to a panel of professionals acting as judges.
Coastal Teen Science Cafe
Teen Science Cafés are fun, engaging out-of-school events taking place across the country. Cafés are organized and coordinated by teens for teens due to a core group of Teen Leaders. The Sea Wolf 4-H Science Communication team invites local teens to the Coastal Teen Science Cafe to chat with local scientists and professionals over free pizza. Cafe audience members can socialize with real-life scientists in a laid-back, informal environment where they can discuss education, STEM careers, and ongoing research.
The Coastal Teen Science Cafe takes place at CMAST on the first Thursday of the month from September to May from 6:00-7:00 PM
NC Green STEM
North Carolina Green STEM empowers youth to take environmental action in their community while encouraging contribution to ongoing citizen science initiatives. This event is for middle and high school students. Event participants can take active part in citizen science research, learn about local organizations dedicated to connected learning, gather information about volunteer/internship opportunities, and compete in themed contests for projects in local stewardship and science communication.
The first-ever NC Green STEM event will take place on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 9 AM – 3 PM.
Annual Summer Camps
Every summer, The Science House at CMAST offers summer camps for students interested in marine science and technology. This year, the camps will focus on the science of fishing.
- Complete Angler Camp (rising 7th-9th graders): Love to fish? Learn about the science of fishing during this summer camp! Fish Brains campers will dissect salt water fish, learn about local fish ecology, and participate in fun outings to learn about pier, surf, and charter boat fishing
