Exploring Data Science Research and Careers

Grade Level(s): High School

Date(s): Two week summer bootcamp (June 15-19 and June 22-26, 2020)

Location: North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC

Cost: Free (you will be paid!)

Description:

Curious about what a career in data science looks like? Come participate in a two week PAID exploration that will include a week-long bootcamp in core data science fundamentals from statistics and computer science. Following the bootcamp, you'll participate in a week of supervised sessions to work on team-based data analysis projects using code that you'll develop. During your projects, you'll learn how data science can help you extract and apply relevant information to daily life. You'll also learn how to communicate those findings by giving a poster presentation of your work at a science symposium in Spring 2021. Finally, you'll also participate in career discussions with real-life data scientists, and hear first-hand about their career pathways. There will be one additional meeting date in the Fall/Winter of 2020 (TBD) and one additional meeting date in the Spring 2021 (TBD) to prepare for the science symposium.

Designed specifically to introduce high school students to potential careers in data science, this exploration program will also feature activities introduced by Sustainable Horizons Institute to enable students to dream, plan, and navigate their own career pathways. Applications from students from historically underrepresented  and underserved groups are highly recommended.
