Designing Your Own STEM Curriculum: Using PBL in Action

Grade Level(s): K-12

Date(s): January 25- January 29, 2021

Location: Zoom

Cost: $125

Description: STEM implementation can begin with a teacher leading a 30-minute STEM activity and progress to a student PBL investigation that may take weeks to accomplish. Navigating this implementation can be a challenge. This program is for teachers ready to design their own STEM curriculum. Teachers will explore common misconceptions and examine four common frameworks of STEM lessons (Problem Based Learning, Project Based Learning, Place Based Learning and Case Based Learning). Not only will you participate in examples of student-led PBLs, but also create your own PBL for your specific content areas. Coaching and collaborative planning ensure that some of the potential roadblocks of implementation can be addressed before you leave. The Science House (Michelle Benigno) will lead this program with Ben Owens from OpenWay Learning. This workshop will occur on zoom with some tasks/work assignments occurring offline. Participants should plan for 4 hours of work each day. The contact hours will be daily from 3:30-5:30 pm with assignments that must be completed before the following session. This workshop will conclude by uploading a copy of your PBL plan for distribution on the TSH website. Participants will receive a certificate for 20 hours of work upon completion. If you have questions about the workshop, contact Michelle Benigno (828-206-3014 / mtbenign@ncsu.edu).
