Data Science Immersion and Exploration for Science, Math, and STEM Educators

Grade Level(s): High School

Date(s): Year-long exploration program with a weeklong summer bootcamp (July 15-19, 2019)

Location: North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC

Cost: $1200 Stipend Provided!

Description: Calling all science, math, and STEM high school educators!  Are you curious about how to integrate fundamentals of data science and analyses in your STEM curriculum?  Do you want to help your students explore possible college majors and careers in STEM fields?  Join us in a year-long PAID exploration that will include a summer bootcamp in core data science fundamentals from statistics and computer science through the Statistics Department at NC State! You will also attend a few Saturdays each semester (Fall and Spring) to dive deeper into data science!

Through this program, you'll learn the fundamentals of data science through hands-on coding, analyses, and visualization methods on real data with real policy implications alongside a wide variety of students.  During the bootcamp, you'll participate alongside teams of local high schoolers, undergraduates, and PhD students in eight supervised sessions over the academic year to work on team-based data analyses projects using code that you'll develop. Through the projects, you'll mentor high schoolers as they explore how data science can extract and apply relevant information to daily life.  You'll also participate in career discussions with real-life data scientists, and hear first-hand about their career pathways.

As a high school science, math, or STEM educator, you play a critical role in exposing your students to STEM and data science careers!  This program is specifically to introduce high school students to potential careers in data science, and to equip and support educators in integrating data science fundamentals and career exposure at the high school level.
